Successful entrepreneur Alex Carrigan's every day life is neatly organized and centered on building his company. But fate drops a number of bombshells when his eccentric grandfather appears on his doorstep to advance together with him, the sudden death of his ex-wife leaves him having a precocious 12-year-old daughter he's convinced he didn't sire, and exquisite redhead Faith Christopher walks into his life.
Faith has her pair of problems. She's been in emotional limbo considering that the death of her fiancé a long period before, as well as the ties to his family are growing increasingly troublesome. She's wondering if she should give into family pressure and marry the second son when Alex wanders into her bakery looking for his grandfather. The physical connection she feels with Alex is instantaneous and mutual, making her question whether a marriage based on companionship is wise as well as possible.
Meanwhile, Alex's grandfather posseses an agenda of his own. Fifty-six years earlier, he'd fallen in love, broken some ancient Indian pottery, and brought a curse on himself with his fantastic heirs. He's convinced he must locate his lost love, return the pottery to its hiding place, and lift the curse, an agenda Alex has heard many times before and doesn't wish to become involved in. But Faith is intrigued by the elderly gentleman's tale and agrees to assist him. Little does she know perfectly what life-changing forces are actually set in motion by her decision.
Can a woman who wants commitment find happiness using a man who doesn't believe in love? Will Alex be capable of accept that does not only is Faith everything he wants but also everything he needs? If Alex and Faith don't help his grandfather solve the a many more than half-century-long mystery, will the curse doom both lovers and all the people they love? And how about the kid he doesn't believe is his but who needs him so desperately? It's a pleasure to learn Freethy's answers to these questions and more, thanks to her charming writing style and expert plotting in The Sweetest Thing.--Lois Faye Dyer
An ominous curse ("And the winds will curse your life until you go back to where it began") propels Freethy's latest novel (after One True Love), which involves a romance that ended when two young lovers, Julian Carrigan along with a girl named Suzannah, stole an Indian pot from a burial site. Fifty years later, Alex Carrigan has greater than he is actually able to handle along with his dotty grandfather, Julian, that has crazy ideas about finding his old flame and returning the Indian pot to the resting place, let alone a smart-mouth teenage girl insisting he's her father. Then there's bakery shop owner Faith Christopher, who adds fuel on the fire together with her recipe for love. Mainly because it turns out, Faith includes a psychic connection with all the pot along with a spiritual connection using the teenager, , involving her in long-time bachelor Alex's life, whether he likes it or not. Together they agree to help Julian find his beloved and end the 50-year-old curse. Beyond this, there's not much to stir the reader's senses: Alex and Faith are romance-formula protagonists along with the plot lines are predictable.

At the core of the impeccably researched, brilliantly executed military history is an analysis of George Washington's crossing with the Delaware River in December 1776 as well as the resulting destruction of the Hessian garrison of Trenton and defeat of the British brigade at Princeton. Fischer's perceptive discussion in the strategic, operational and tactical factors involved is by itself definitely worth the book's purchase. He demonstrates Washington's insight to the revolution's desperate political circumstances, shows how that influenced the concept of a riposte against an enemy grown overconfident with success and presents Washington's skillful use of what his army could do well. Even more useful is Fischer's analysis in the internal dynamics with the combatants. He demonstrates mastery of the character of the American, British and Hessian armies, highlighting that British troops, too, fought for ideals, sacred to them, of loyalty and service. Above all, Brandeis historian Fischer (Albion's Seed) uses the Trenton campaign to reveal the existence, even inside the revolution's early stage, of your distinctively American way of war, much of it based on the single fact: civil and military leaders were accountable to a citizenry through their representatives. From Washington down, Fischer shows, military leaders acknowledged civil supremacy and caused civil officials. Washington used firepower and intelligence as force multipliers to speed the war for a practical those who planned to win quickly to be able to return for their ordinary lives. Tempo, initiative and speed marked the Trenton campaign from first to last. And Washington fought humanely, extending quarter in battle and insisting on decent treatment of prisoners. The crossing of the Delaware, Fischer teaches, ought to be seen as emblematic of a much more than a turning in the war's tide. 91 halftone, 15 maps. 3-city author tour.

Adult/High School-Another stirring effort by the author of Paul Revere's Ride (Oxford, 1994). Readers will again cheer American perseverance, inventiveness, and improvisation as Washington, his officers, along with their men turn the first military defeats of Long Island and The big apple City into victory at Trenton and Princeton. The opening chapter is devoted on the painting Washington Crossing the Delaware. Then mcdougal discusses the British, Hessian, and American military units that were associated with these campaigns and provides background on their own officers. This is Fischer's strong suit: he tells stories and gives details that bring history alive. He helps to create the point that decisions created for varying reasons by converging teams of people determine history. In the hands of this kind of thorough researcher and talented writer, this can be powerful stuff. The bulk from the book deals with the battles and their aftermath. The writing is enriched by small reproductions of portraits, many by Charles Willson Peale, in the major players. The past chapter summarizes Fischer's points and would make a great teaching tool by itself.

Product Description
Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she's made against each other from the bloody arena alive, she's still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who can they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what's worse, President Snow has caused it to be clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss's family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins's groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises being one in the most mentioned books in the year.
A Q&A with Suzanne Collins, Author of Mockingjay (The Final Book of The Hunger Games)
Q: You have said in the start that The Hunger Games story was intended being a trilogy. Did it really end just how you planned it from your beginning?
A: Very much so. While I did not know every detail, of course, the arc with the story from gladiator game, to revolution, to war, for the eventual outcome remained constant through the writing process.
Q: We understand you worked about the initial screenplay for the film to get according to The Hunger Games. What could be the biggest difference between writing a novel and writing a screenplay?
A: There are several significant differences. Time, for starters. When you're adapting a novel right into a two-hour movie you simply can't take everything with you. The story has being condensed to suit the brand new form. Then there's the question of methods best to take a magazine told inside the first person and provides tense and transform it right into a satisfying dramatic experience. In the novel, you won't ever leave Katniss for any second and are privy to any or all of her thoughts so you'll need a method to dramatize her inner world and to produce it possible for other characters to exist outside her company. Finally, you have the challenge of the easiest way to present the violence while still maintaining a PG-13 rating to ensure that your core audience can view it. A large amount of situations are acceptable on the page that would not be on a screen. So how certain moments are depicted could eventually be inside director's hands.
Q: Are you currently capable to consider future projects while working on The Hunger Games, or are you immersed within the world you get lucky and be currently creating so fully that it is too difficult to consider new ideas?
A: I've a few seeds of ideas floating around within my head but--given much of my focus is still on The Hunger Games--it is going to be awhile before one fully emerges and I can commence to develop it.
Q: The Hunger Games is once a year televised event through which one boy and something girl from each with the twelve districts is expected to participate inside a fight-to-the-death on live TV. Exactly what do you believe the appeal of reality television is--to both kids and adults?
A: Well, they're often set up as games and, like sporting events, there's an desire for seeing who wins. The contestants are generally unknown, which means they are relatable. Sometimes they have very talented people performing. Then there is the voyeuristic thrill—watching people being humiliated, or taken to tears, or suffering physically--which I have found very disturbing. There's also the potential for desensitizing the audience, in order that when they see real tragedy playing out on, say, the news, it doesn't have the impact it should.
Q: In case you were instructed to compete in the Hunger Games, what can you think that your skill would be?
A: Hiding. I'd be scaling those trees like Katniss and Rue. Since I had been trained in sword-fighting, I guess my best hope could be to get hold of an rapier if there is one available. But the facts is I'd probably get in regards to a four in Training.
Q: What can you hope readers will come away with once they read The Hunger Games trilogy?
A: Questions about how precisely elements of the books could be relevant of their own lives. And, if they're disturbing, what they might do about them.
Q: What were some of one's favorite novels when you are a teen?
A: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith
The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers
Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy
Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
Lord in the Flies by William Golding
Boris by Jaapter Haar
Germinal by Emile Zola
Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Gr 7 Up–The final installment of Suzanne Collins's trilogy sets Katniss in a single more Hunger Game, but on this occasion it is for world control. While it is really a clever twist on the original plot, it means that there is certainly less focus for the individual characters plus more on political intrigue and large scale destruction. That said, Carolyn McCormick will continue to breathe life right into a less vibrant Katniss by showing her despair both at those she feels accountable for killing and and also at her own motives and choices. This is surely an older, wiser, sadder, and very reluctant heroine, torn between revenge and compassion. McCormick captures these conflicts by changing the pitch and pacing of Katniss's voice. Katniss is both a pawn in the rebels and also the victim of President Snow, who uses Peeta to make an endeavor to control Katniss. Peeta's struggles are well evidenced in the voice, which goes from rage to puzzlement to an unsure come back to sweetness. McCormick also makes all the secondary characters—some malevolent, others benevolent, and a whole lot of confused—very real with distinct voices and agendas/concerns. She acts just like an outside chronicler in giving listeners just “the facts” but additionally respects the individuality and unique challenges of each of the main characters. A dusty, dreamy Hawaii rife with sexual frustration, loneliness and adolescent heartbreak will be the setting to the nine stories of Hemmings's bold debut collection. Misery adores company in "Final Girl," by which just one mother discovers a pornographic magazine in her 13-year-old son's room and turns on him despite herself, wishing he'd a greater portion of "that character-developing sadness. Instead, he's a kid who sings inside car." In the title story, intrepid preteen Kora is anxious to suit into her clique of Lolitaesque teenage friends—island girls "doing bad things in pretty places"—and is frightened of losing her best friend, Wendy, when Wendy's delinquent brother, Perry, resurfaces. In "Begin with an Outline," a lady is haunted by her imprisoned father, a notorious drug dealer; in "Island Cowboys," embittered, indebted Pete covets his brother's easy prosperity and finds forbidden solace in the niece. A 16-year-old boy pines for his social-climbing nanny in "Secret Clutch," simply to discover that she has brought up regarding his wealthy father; a teenage girl and her father's mistress produce a disturbing bond in "Location Scouts." At times Hemmings steers her troubled protagonists in predictable directions, but overall these are fresh, acerbic tales, offering a distinctive perspective on everyday routine in the vacation paradise. Just because the individual land masses which make the Hawaiian Islands are worlds unto themselves, so, too, will be the characters Hemmings depicts on this penetrating exploration from the nature of families as well as the those who belong to them. Disappointment and isolation, frustration and regret inform each story's conflict, whether or not this is a father unprepared to raise his 10-year-old daughter while her mother lies in the coma, as with "The Minor Wars," or possibly a pack of teenage girls flirting with independence in "House of Thieves." Hemmings takes her characters' cues from your composition in the islands she knows so well, their volcanic cores smoldering just beneath the surface, either expected to lie dormant or susceptible to violent outbursts. Set against the tropical backdrop of sun, sand, and surf, Hemmings' stories are typical the more surreal for his or her perceptive juxtaposition of tumultuous emotions within this type of seemingly benign paradise. With a dynamic and imaginative voice, Hemmings infuses her stories with keen insight, and lavishes her characters with profound empathy. Carol Haggas

Starred Review. Gr 7 Up--Every year in Panem, the dystopic nation that exists the place that the U.S. employed to be, the Capitol holds a televised tournament through which two teen "tributes" from each with the surrounding districts fight a gruesome battle for the death. Within The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the tributes from impoverished District Twelve, thwarted the Gamemakers, forcing these phones let both teens survive. In this rabidly anticipated sequel, Katniss, again the narrator, returns home to locate herself more the biggest market of attention than ever. The sinister President Snow surprises her using a visit, and Katniss’s fear when Snow meets with your ex alone is both palpable and justified. Catching Fire is split into three parts: Katniss and Peeta’s mandatory Victory Tour through the districts, preparations for the 75th Annual Hunger Games, and a truncated version from the Games themselves. Slower paced than its predecessor, this sequel explores the nation of Panem: its power structure, rumors of the secret district, and a spreading rebellion, ignited by Katniss and Peeta’s subversive victory. Katniss also deepens being a character. Though initially bewildered through the attention paid to her, she comes almost to embrace her status because the rebels’ symbolic leader. Though more with the story takes place outside of the arena than within, this sequel has enough action to impress Hunger Games fans leaving enough questions tantalizingly unanswered for readers to get desperate for your next installment.

Reviewers were very happy to report the Hunger Games trilogy is alive and well, and all sorts of looked forward on the third book within the series after this one's stunning conclusion. But they disagreed over whether Catching Fire was just like the first book Hunger Games or ought to be viewed as somewhat of your "sophomore slump." Several critics who remained unconvinced by Katniss's romantic dilemma made unfavorable comparisons for the human-vampire-werewolf love triangle in Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. But most reviewers felt that Catching Fire was still a thrill because Collins replicated her initial success at balancing action, violence, and heroism in a very method that will enthrall young readers without providing them with (too many) nightmares.
